Adult club training groups on offer:

Couch to 5km - complete beginners running programme
January - February - we run one C25K programme a year.

5km-10km - progression group
This is for C25K graduates & intermediate runners.
This usually takes place from mid-February on wards.
An opportunity to meet as a group. Meet at the track and run.

Every Monday and Wednesday at 8pm
(Max distance in Winter evenings due to darkness
- 9km approx around the village of Clane, some running may take place on the track)

(Hi-Vis Jackets are compulsory when out in the dark for the duration of the dark Autumn/Winter months.)

Track training sessions:
Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8pm on the track
(Rain, Hail or Shine!!!)
Open to ALL MEMBERS - all abilities.

The club has hired a professional coach, Niall Wyer, for our Tuesday night adult sessions, at no extra cost to our members.
Niall will take you through mobility and strength & conditioning and running mechanics on the track.

On Thursday nights, we are very privileged to have Christy Maloney, who has volunteered his coaching skills to the club.

Christy has vast personal experience in sprinting, middle & long distance running and specialises in speed work.
His training methods are inclusive, enthusiastic, friendly and encouraging to all levels and abilities.
His sessions include:
- Strength & Conditioning
- Interval training
- Sub 20 min 5km training

Open Run - 5km+ maintenance running & further distances.
This is an open non leader led leisure run "Meet & Run" group
- arranged by members via social messaging.
Any time, any place, any distance!

Now that you are part of a large established Meet & Run group, just pop your message up on our social messaging app "Club Zapp" with your time and place, and meet up with similar paced individuals and run for a chosen distance, go back when you are done! Very popular!!

(Hi-Vis Jackets are compulsory when out in the dark for the duration of the dark Autumn/Winter months.)

Long run at the weekend
- open leisure run for those who want to run a further distance in a nice location but in a group setting. (Safer & more encouraging)

This long run has organically settled on Saturday mornings with a large group who run in 5km loops of Clane starting from 8am.

However, members can put a call out on the social messaging for a Sunday run long runs either.

Morning Runs:
Unofficial morning week day runs are organised frequently between our members, usually the evening before, via our social messaging.
***Meet up time is usually after school drop off between 8am-9:30am, the meet up locations can vary however***

Where do we train?
We meet at the track and go from there.
In Winter we train on the track or around Clane on the lit pathways but in Spring/ Summer meet up locations may vary.
Locations include: Donadea, Ballinafagh lake, Monread, Prosperous, Maynooth/Kilcock greenways, the Curragh & Phoenix park.

Important information on Couch to 5km:

Picture
Our 2023 Couch to 5k group.

You must have a realistic expectation to participate!

You do not need to be able to run to start this plan, but a realistic expectation is that you do need to have a very basic level of fitness to participate in our beginner C25K running programmes.
i.e be able to walk briskly but comfortably for at least 3km.

How many sessions do you need to do a week to succeed with the Couch to 5km running programme?

....THREE sessions a week is required at least.
Commitment and regular frequency is the key to success.

The C25K running group moves forward weekly through the programme, for the duration of 7 weeks, and members will fall behind if they don't keep to the structured training plan that is set out for them each week.

The first two sessions can be run with the group on the scheduled training evenings, and you will be expected to do your third run, by yourself, on Friday or over the weekend.

We are unable to hold C25K training up to stay back for members who have not kept to the scheduled 3 sessions a week training plan, nor can we take on new members half way though the programme...it is not fair on the rest of the group who are working hard to progress & the volunteer leaders who are giving up their time to be there for you.

Clane AC is run entirely by volunteers

Picture

Yes, its true!

Clane Athletic club is a completely volunteer based organisation.

All our juvenile coaches, running club leaders, administration staff, committee members and other club helpers comprise of local residents from around the area of Clane. Some have experience, others are just learning as they go. They have same common goal of passing on the love of athletics and personal fitness to the next generation.

They happily offer up their free time, at no financial gain whatsoever, to train both the children and adults, while also covering all our administration roles and other club duties.

Your membership fee goes towards maintenance of our track facility, winter lighting, upkeep and replacement of club equipment, and the administrative expenses that are required for general running of the club. Your fee is a valuable contribution towards this wonderful facility within your local community and plus it is also helping to secure the future of Irish Athletics

Running for COMPLETE BEGINNERS

Please don't try to use the formal online registration with Athletics Ireland if you are a beginner runner and want to join the Couch to 5km group.

The Couch to 5km 7 week membership is not an Athletics Ireland full annual membership. Only use the special link to register for the C25K.

It is a short term, 7 week membership and is dealt with separately from the main Clane AC Athletics Ireland annual membership.

Beginner adult runners must come through our Couch to 5km programme.
This is a 7 weeks dedicated leader led programme held in January and is independent of the annual Clane AC Athletics Ireland membership.

Interested C25K participants must register with us in person at our designated registration evenings held in late December/early January.

This programme takes place in early January and finishes in mid-February.
We run ONE Couch to 5km programme a year.

We cannot cater for complete beginner runners after mid-February as our leaders will be moving on with the group to other training programmes.

*Full Clane AC Membership runs from January 1st - 31st December, regardless of what date you register. This is governed by Athletic Irelands membership criteria, not the club *
